What an Inspiring Summer
Together, with many new and old faces of our growing community, we explored ways in which work can be more fulfilling. This was the Summer of Pioneers!
Those who joined us in our countryside retreat came with enthusiasm from their various sectors, with their different projects, alone and with teams. They gave our Beach-House indoor camping experience a try, and gave a trial run to the little worlds we created for them to be inspired and work in.
We are happy to say that the response was overwhelmingly good to what we created this year. We also received some wonderful suggestions on what could be done differently, and what areas we should focus more on.
In just four weeks Coconat had visitors from Berlin, Bonn, Hamburg, Poland, and Switzerland. We are thrilled to announce that we had visitors from Gotzerberge too. We had hoped that we would create a place of interest to local people as well, and they came with smiles on their faces.
The online and word of mouth community is over 700 strong. And we had interviews with journalists from all over the place – really! – Bali, Canada, the USA and even Germany! 😉
To sum up, our proof of concept phase was really a great success – because of all of you.

A huge thanks to all the people who not only believed in us but who actively supported in many different ways, and to all the guests who have embarked on this little workation experiment with us.
What do a Mobile Compost Toilet, a Give-box, and an Overdose of Apples have in common?
In addition to ‘regular’ Coconat guests, during the last week of the Summer of Pioneers we had friends from Moviemiento, Berlin’s traveling film festival, and L’Atelier Toupie, the great upcyclists from southern France, join us in Götzerberge.
The project ‘Récupère le Paradis’, or ‘Reclaiming Paradise’, explored the concept of paradise and its main symbol: the apple. In just 5 days upcycling workshops brought to life a mobile compost toilet and a give-box of our very own to share with our village community. We also made plenty of visits to the local apple, pear, and choke cherry trees, picking the little treasures which were happily transformed into delectable cakes, pies, and jams.
When the end of the project coincided with the end of of Coconat’s Summer of Pioneers, and Landwerk’s traditional Spätsommerfest – we thought, ‘Why not have a grand party together!?’ And that is just what we did till the wee hours.
PRESS RELEASE:: Germany’s First Workation Retreat Opens ‘Summer of Pioneers’
Relax and Get Some Work Done Just Outside of Berlin
22 August 2015, Götzerberge – Coconat – a workation retreat will open it’s doors for it’s ‘Summer of Pioneers’ from 22 August to 20 September. For an energetic 4 weeks, people can try one of the world’s first dedicated workation retreats.
A ‘workation retreat’ combines the conveniences and technology of an urban workspace with the leafy peacefulness of the countryside.
Anyone who works location independently, or is looking for a unique break-out location for their small team, is welcome. Overnight stays can be arranged for a matter of days or weeks.
‘Coconat exists to bring new energy and inspiration in to work, and your productivity is our main focus. You only need to think on your project or about enjoying your free-time, we take care of everything else.’ says Julianne Becker, Co-founder of Coconat.
Located in the Southwest of Brandenburg, Coconat is just a one-hour train ride from Berlin to the small village of Götzerberge. The property promises not to disappoint with its truly unique history intact and ready to be experienced. An 1870s Villa was transformed in the 1970s GDR to a working holiday resort, and left with an amazing mix of architectural styles. Not to mention the historical Lustgarten and romantic tower in the back
Working and sleeping are easy done. If it is with a laptop or for a meeting, people can settle in to the Wintergarten coworking space, the garden picnic table, the cozy cabin, or even quickly down the path to the river. Accommodation this year is simple and sweet, with either an indoor camping experience or in that same cozy cabin mentioned before.
It is a place for solitude, but not isolation. Mealtimes are a shared event, along with low-key evenings around the campfire or nestled into the lounge on cooler nights.
On 22 August will be the Open House and Grand Pioneer Party, come by for tours, to meet partners, first users, listen to Ashia and the Bison Rouge live, and celebrate with the community – both local and from Berlin.
For the digital nomad curious, those who can work remotely but have not taken the plunge yet, then perhaps the Digital Nomad Pop-up event from 29-30 August is right for you. Expect some practical advice from leaders in the scene, campfire stories, and of course some coworking.

Notes from a super early sneak preview
Janosch and Julianne were so kind to host me for three days even though Coconat had not officially opened yet. I was urgently looking for a place to do some intensive writing on my habilitation and at the same time not completely miss out on the beautiful summer by sitting in a library in downtown Berlin all day.
Coconat was pretty perfect for exactly this combination. Going for a swim in the lake or a run in the woods? It’s all possible in the immediate neighborhood. The workstations were not ready yet, so i was mostly writing at a picknic table in the beautiful garden and in an improvised office space in a former kitchen. Both places were alright but, telling from the plans, the future workspaces are going to top that by orders of magnitude. Looking forward with excitement to experiencing that!
For me by far the most important ingredient of a place like this is the atmosphere, and I was totally amazed by the welcoming, relaxed, and at the same time buzzing, focused and productive vibes that fill the entire site. OH, and not to forget the delicious food. And the campfire in the evening. And a lovely crowd of Coconat supporters that were there to help with the renovating and rebuilding. I will definitely be back!
